Dehiwala National Zoo in Sri Lanka
The Dehiwala National Zoo, renowned for its extensive collection of diverse wildlife, stands as one of the oldest zoological institutions in Asia and is globally recognized as the Colombo Zoo.
Presently, the zoo accommodates 72 mammal species, 65 bird species, 31 reptile species, 89 fish species, 03 amphibian families, and 30 butterfly species. The total animal count fluctuates between 2500-3000 due to breeding and the presence of freely living bird colonies. Beyond its assortment of local and exotic animals, Dehiwala Zoo has gained acclaim for its lush landscaping. Notably, the zoo actively contributes to conservation efforts by responsibly breeding certain rare and endangered species, emphasizing proper animal welfare.
Each year, the zoo attracts over one and a half million visitors, including both local and international tourists. Additionally, more than 2000 students and student groups from schools and universities visit the zoo for educational purposes. In response to the evolving world, the zoo is engaged in significant redevelopment initiatives aimed at enhancing its overall image and providing optimal facilities for both animals and visitors.
